Wrong Things To Highlight

My wife told me yesterday that somebody wrote a book about the “love story” between Siti Nurhaliza and Datuk K. How they met and how Datuk K fell for her etc. etc. and to me, how it is related to my life I have yet to figure it out. Anyway, the 8.00 p.m. news also never miss to tell this and that about Siti and Datuk K. (Macam Melodi la pulak). What good the news do us I don’t know and still people wake up every morning and ask how Siti and Datuk K is doing.

I mean, how the news contribute to your daily life is still a mystery. It does not give you pay raise (except for the newspaper vendors and printers) and it does not give any major impact on the Malaysian Economy what more our GDP (orang melayu cakap keluaran dalam negara kasar atau KDNK). Come on let Siti and Datuk K live in peace. If they want to get married, so be it. Don’t have to report it every day. Once the day comes, then say that they are married and end the report there. Don’t have to make daily or weekly report like the world cup report (see what I mean. The news of Siti and Datuk K even make the world cup report look dull).

The second almost sensation news is about Mawi. Mawi loss his father and broke up with his fiancée. It is almost as good as the Siti and Datuk K news. And what more every day we have follow up on this story. What the fiancée name? Can’t really recall at the moment choose to keep her lips together on this matter. But she says she will speak up one day. May be she’ll do the tell it all to some tabloids or some publishers. I can guess that there are a lot of them (I mean the tabloids and the publishers) queuing up to write the “hot” story.

But don’t put your hope too high because the “hot” story may not be as “hot” as you think since this is Malaysia. How “hot” can a story be? Never beat the “I slept with Beckham” story. What’s her name? Can’t recall that either. She’s Malaysian though, according to the report.

Anyway, the point I’m trying to make here is no matter how far we go, we are still with our local kind of attitude. Like all these stories, gossips and concocted stories (some of the stories were made up to sell the newspapers and magazines) and believe it or not, not many people (I’m focusing on malays who claimed they are muslims) realized what is happening in reality. I think if I asked how many of us follows the Lina Joy’s appeal at the Federal Court, I will get a very disappointing number of those who are concerned with the way thing are stirring up there in the Federal Court. That is why Siti or Mawi story make the headlines and the Lina Joy appeal is at the fourth or later pages.

Just to highlight a bit about the Lina Joy’s case. Nothing much actually, this lady converted to Christianity and wanted the word Islam removed from her Identity Card (“IC”). Her application at the National Registration Department (“NRD”) to remove the word Islam was rejected. Now she is contesting that the decision of the NRD was ultra vires and she should be allowed to delete the word Islam from her IC. The fact that she had renounced Islam also does not help her in her application since the court held that matters pertaining to Islam still falls under the Shariah Court and the Civil Court does not have jurisdiction over matter pertaining to those who profess Islam as his or her faith.

The argument on the table, inter alia, that the Shariah laws is ultra vires the Federal Constitution in relation to freedom of religion. However, in according to Shariah laws, one who renounce Islam or rudely we call them apostates, should be given counseling by the Religious Authority and should be asked to come back to Islam. If they refuse, then the Shariah laws provide that they should be terminated. The reasons behind this particular provision of Shariah law are, among others, keep the sanctity of Islam and those who profess Islam.

May be some of us may not understand this particular bit and say it is harsh and Islam is not promoting freedom of religion etc. etc. but if you understand and if you do your research, you may find the beauty of the Shariah principles may Allah guide them in their finding. Alas some of us refuse or may be does not want to understand and for those who refuse or does not want to understand, I assume that Allah has “taken back” their ability to hear, see and understand (their heart) explanations. So no use of arguing with these people in relation to thing that they know not or things which they only have shallow understanding in some areas.

I know some of those in that group (in the form of NGO’s etc.) will say that the Federal Constitution is the supreme law of the land but tell you the truth, there are higher laws and more important as compared to the Federal Constitution. The Courts may have not point it out yet but I’d say it should have been highlighted then and should be the highest law of the land (not the Federal Constitution rather the Shariah Principles). Let me stop here because discussion in relation to this matter will confuse some of you or some even may come to a conclusion that Islam is violence, extreme and not suitable for today’s world. Coming out with the “Islam Hadhari” concept also does not help. What is “Islam Hadhari”? Nobody have a clue actually on what is Islam Hadhari and I will not make any comments on that matter or may be I will give some of my thought in another forum.

Just a note to everybody, the topic regarding Islam cannot be discussed in a short forum because the Revealed Notion is very wide and if you dare say that you are a master in Islamic matters, just think again. The area to cover is too wide from daily life to the administration of a government and I had a spell in an Islamic Religious institution and I’m still searching for more explanations to understand more and to cover some more areas in which I failed to grasp while I was in the institution. Because there is a saying what we understand about the wide areas in the Revealed Notion is just like a drop of water in the big ocean.
